Sheep & Dumba — Qurbani 2026 guide.

Dumba — fat-tailed sheep — is Pakistan's premium-tier single-hissa Qurbani animal. Kajli, Balkhi, and Kaghani are the major breeds. Expect Rs 85,000–220,000 for Qurbani-grade animals in 2026.

Sheep vs dumba

Dumba specifically refers to fat-tailed sheep breeds native to Central Asia and northern Pakistan. Sheep is the umbrella term including non-fat-tailed varieties. Both are Qurbani-valid for one hissa, minimum 1 year.

South Asian Qurbani tradition leans dumba. The distinctive fat tail is aesthetic, not a Shariah requirement.

Major breeds

Kajli — Punjab's signature dumba. Black face, white body, mid-size (40–60kg). Premium pricing. Popular in Lahore, Gujranwala, Sargodha.

Balkhi — Afghan-origin, large fat-tailed, 50–80kg. The showpiece dumba. Commands the highest prices. Popular with Qurbani enthusiasts in KP and northern Punjab.

Kaghani — Hazara mountain breed, brown-red, hardy, mid-size. Mid-tier pricing. Popular in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Abbottabad.

Chakwali — Pothohar region. Compact, dual-purpose. Growing mid-tier popularity.

Rambouillet / Crossbreed — Merino-cross, wool-heavy, 35–55kg. Budget tier, less popular for Qurbani aesthetics.

Selection tips

  • Teeth check — by 1 year, front milk teeth replaced by permanent incisors
  • Walk the animal — no lameness
  • Check ears — no missing more than a third
  • Tail assessment (dumba) — a full fat tail signals well-fed, good health
  • Eyes clear — no cloudiness or discharge

The 6-month exception

Per the Hanafi madhab, a 6-month lamb that visually matches a 1-year sheep in size is permissible for Qurbani. This is a practical concession for fast-growing premium breeds. The "visually matches" test is judged by a knowledgeable buyer, not measured.
